Reader Question - Teacher Style on a Budget

ReaderQuestion

I know that you regularly answer reader questions on your blog, and I am really struggling with this, so I thought maybe you might have some insight!
Anyway, I start back at school in about a month, and I am desperately in need of some new professional-looking work attire, but I can't really find anything. I typically just throw on dress pants (trousers) and a top, but I'm sick of that. The school where I teach at is extremely conservative, so any skirt that I wear has to be mid-calf length, no shorter, and I have a terrible time finding anything past knee-length. And of course, nothing low cut. I really want to look cute and professional, not like a frumpy teacher...and I am on an extremely limited budget. Any thoughts or advice?
Thanks and I hope you've had a lovely weekend! :)

Casey

Casey, you are so adorable! Love that you asked for my opinion. First up, wearing dress pants and a top can be a good fall back, especially given your employer's strict dress code. If you want to keep this combo fresh and fun keep this post in mind and the important of pattern and color.

Also, if wearing this combo shop for shirts that have a lot of interest. eShakti is a great place for unusual and embellished tops. Here are just a few that grabbed my eye and will look less than boring when paired with solid trousers.

Now on to skirts . . . I've seen on your blog that you shop at Torrid frequently and with them being a "juniors" place their hemlines are a little shorter (around 19 - 20 inches). So in order to get dresses/skirts that are appropriate at your school you may need to change where you shop. Also, hemlines are coming down for fall and lots of magazies are showing skirts that are below the knee or mid-calf. So, while at first you may feel they are a bit matronly on you I think the look can be pretty chic (and great paired with tights and boots come cooler temps). I took a look around Sonsi and pulled together a few skirts that have hemines that come in at 25 inches and longer.

Also, if you thrift at all be sure to check out the skirts. It is easy to find ones with longer hemlines and most of the time the price will be around $5 or less per skirt which is great for when you are on a budget.

I hope this helps, Casey, have a great school year!

Just wanted to say thanks so much for always posting about work appropriate clothing. I've been so busy that I haven't maintained my wardrobe. I now need to start from scratch! Although I rarely comment, I do think you are doing an excellent job. Keep up the good work!
