Mixing & Matching from the Beginning

makethemost

While growing up I spent a lot of time with my Grandma Judy. One of our favorite activities was shopping. I remember once when I was in the 4th or 5th grade asking my Grandma if I could get a pair of khaki shorts. She graciously said yes and we were on our way to the mall. I found the perfect pair of shorts only to be told by Grandma that we now needed to find a shirt to go with them. I said, "but, Grandma, that is the great thing about khaki shorts - they go with EVERYTHING". Well, my Grandma didn't quite see it like that. To her a wardrobe was all about "outfits". You didn't buy the skirt unless you picked out the perfect top to go with it, etc.

I have always been about separates and mixing and matching my way to a multitude of outfits. While my Grandma and I may not have agreed on outfits vs. separates I do have to thank her for having a great sense of style and strong love for accessories - it definitely rubbed off on me.

But back to the main reason for this post . . . a month ago while attending the Lane Bryant Blogger Conference* I was given the opportunity to go into one of their gorgeous stores and pick out any "outfit" I wanted. Normally I can walk into any store and start grabbing pieces that I like immediately, but I felt extremely daunted by picking out a whole outfit at one time.

I ended up picking a bunch of pieces that I loved as separates and could see working with other pieces already in my closet. The fact that they worked well together as an outfit was an extra bonus!

And a look at how I have used the individual pieces in other outfits over the past month:

I also wore the necklace and bracelets here.

When you go shopping do you shop for "outfits" or separates to mix and match with the items already in your closet?

haha my mom always took me shopping in the same way. And I was also taught that if you had a patterned skirt for example, you had to take one of the colors of the pattern and find a top that was that color. Not a bad idea, but definitely not the ONLY way to create an outfit! The idea of wearing two things of totally different colors (other than say black pants with some other color top) was totally foreign to me when I was younger.

Come to think of it, my mom really dislikes shopping and I wonder if that's why -because she feels pressure to create whole outfits at a time?

I'm like you - usually as separates - if the piece fits right, I know it will fit somewhere in my closet! I do sometimes create outfits in the dressing room, but it's only because I want to see what the pieces might look like together (did that make sense?). I feel like my wardrobe is eclectic but yet versatile.

I love all of the outfits you made! And if I haven't said it before, that professional pictures of you is stunning.

I typically look for separates that I know can be mixed and matched, unless I'm looking for something for a specific event/situation, in which case I'll try to create an entire outfit.

I am all about the separates when I shop. My mom is totally the opposite, and have quite a few friends who only buy complete outfits, and will only wear this shirt with these pants and this sweater. I am forever trying to stress the concept of mix and match!

Ha! My grandma and mom are the same way, you buy a complete "outfit"... I totally just pick up random stuff here and there without really thinking about what it will go with, because I figure I can make it work with something in my closet!

I shop for outfits. For some reason I can't remember what I have in my closet when I shop. Then when I get home I am surprised at what all I can mix and match. Have a great evening!
