Reader Question - Casual Engagment Pics

ReaderQuestion

I think you do such a great job on your blog answering reader's questions that I have one for you. and its a doozy!

I am getting married in October and my engagement pictures are at the end of the month. We are having our engagement session taken at the place where we got engaged,
Apple Holler, an apple orchard/farm/park/country/family-style place so we will be outdoors. I am racking my brain to find the perfect outfit! I know I want it casual in jeans, but need some flair. I am thinking jeans, brightly colored sneakers, and a causal but cute top. It has to follow these rules: no patterns, my fiancé and I have to coordinate, and classic silhouettes. Thanks in advance for your help! This is for only one of the most important pics I'll ever take in my life! lol.

Wow, Michelle, thanks for not putting any pressure on me or anything with your "only one of the most important pics I'll ever take in my life"! I know you mentioned "colored sneakers" in your message, but not being much of a sneaker girl myself I only used sneakers in one of the outfit ideas (sorry, but you could easily swap for sneaks in any of these looks). In the others I opted for colorful flats and even added a bit of pattern with the shoes in one set.

Yellow and Navy is one of my favorite, classic color combos, so I used that as inspiration for this first set. A pretty yellow top with some detailing and lightweight navy cardi for you and polo for your fiance. To finish it off striped flats and plaid slip-ons for shoes (my man has these same shoes and I think they look great with jeans!).

Next up we have a more vibrant combo of yellow, green and purple. The top has cute eyelet detailing and ties so you can keep the jewelry simple and leave the focus on your smiles and engagement ring.

Lastly, you can't go wrong with a classic combo of white and denim with red accents. The white will simply pop against the rich green background of the orchard. Plus for a little extra whimsy the "apple" necklace is fun given your engagement story and where the pictures will be taken.

I hope these combos at least give you a spring board for your outfits. Have fun and congratulations!

Having recently shot my own engagement pictures - I think you did a great job coming up with options.

My fiance and I wore shades of blue and teal - a classic navy blazer, white button up, khakis, and blue striped tie for him (complete with matching argyle socks). I wore a teal linen dress and accessorized with silver flats, brown strappy sandals, simple silver jewelry and a bright coral pashmina.

I'd have to go with the Navy/yellow as my favorite :-)

I really like your middle combo. The shoes are super-cute, and I appreciate that the tops aren't the same color. That way the couple's torsos aren't so "blendy" in the photos.

My Husband (I love calling him that) and I actually had 3 sets of engagement photos taken last year.

1. outside in late May. We both wore black shirts. He wore khaki pants, and I wore white capri's. I LOVE the way the black pops against the lush greenery in the background, sort of like the white option here.

2. mid-August, outside at the botanical gardens.
Despite loving the "pop" in the first pictures, I felt that black didn't really fit out up-beat and out going personalities, so this time I chose bright shirts. Again casual, with jeans for me and tan cargo-pants for him. I wore a cute red top, and he wore a bright blue polo-shirt. These photo are very bright, and colorful. We "blend-in" with the scenery more instead of standing out from it, like before.

3. "Formal" studio portraits. I again went back to black. Black just seems so elegant to me, and it works well with our settings/backdrops.

After seeing Kimberly's options, I wish I'd chosen white tops for the first outdoor pictures. I think that would be great against the scenery, and give you the "pop" but not be "boring in black" :) I especially love the little splashes of red in that look, and the apple necklace.

Good luck Michelle, and I'm sure the photos will be great no matter what you wear! There's something about engagement photos.... the love also come through and makes the couple look radiant!

Those purple shoes in the second combo are entirely too cute!

Also, you did a great job picking clothes. I wish I had asked you when we were planning for our engagement photos!

Hey Kim! Thanks so much for your post and to all of your lovely readers comments.

See, I knew you would do well under pressure so I had to add that comment, lol.

I didn't even think of flats versus sneakers, duh, of course! That opens up so many more options!

I am in love with the apple necklace (he gave me the ring in a half eaten apple!) and the pop of red in the shoes. Adorable!

Thanks so much and I will be sure to post some engagement pics on my blog within the next month. Yay!
