DIY - E & J Embellished Shirt

crafty

While flipping through March's People Style Watch magazine last week I spied this great Elizabeth & James Pop Artist Shirt. I thought the idea of an embellished oversized white shirt was fun, but I knew at $325 I wouldn't be buying it any time soon.

I decided I could make something similar though!

Items Needed:

Embellished Trim/Ribbon (I bought this spool of sequined trim from Hobby Lobby for $2.50)
Stitch Witchery (also from Hobby Lobby for $3.50)
Scissors
White Shirt - I happened to order an oversized white shirt a few weeks ago since it was on sale for $6 (currently $15 from Roaman's, but check out the Deals & Steals page for a promo code for 40% off!). This is also a great item to thrift from the men's section to for less than $5.
Iron (not pictured)

I decided to embellish more than just the inside of the button placket and to do three sides. So, I cut the top two buttons off to give me a smooth surface to work with.

Next cut three lengths of sequined trim and three pieces of Stitch Witchery the same length. Fuse the embellished trim to the shirt by following the Stitch Witchery instructions (click here for more details).

There you have it - with $10 and 10 minutes I have a great shirt to toss on with jeans and heels for cocktails out with the girls (and an extra $315 in my bank account)!

Fantastic DIY. I'll be honest - the only DIYs that I'm good at are ones that take less than 15 minutes to make.

I can't quite tell from the photos-- Did you replace the buttons you took off? (By the way, changing out the buttons on a shirt, or cardi is another great, inexpensive way to get a whole new look.)

Thanks, ladies!

Maureen - I didn't replace the buttons as I intend on wearing it open (but with a cami on underneath) like the E&J version is on the model.
