Julie, I'm not so sure I have a gene, but I do use my resources when it comes to hunting down items. One of them is Shop Style. It's a great website that not only can you search for items but you can narrow down your search based on price, color and more.
With that, I found some long denim skirts for you. I'm not sure what size you wear, but a lot of the offerings are in plus sizes.
Top Row (L - R):
L-Pocket Denim Straight Skirt - Avenue, $24.99 (Plus Size)
Fit-and-flare long skirt - Newport News, $35
Straight Denim Skirt - Catherine's, $36 (Plus Size)
Bottom Row (L - R):
A-Line Denim Skirt - Avenue, $40 (Plus Size)
Chop Pocket Denim Skirt - Catherine's, $48 (Plus Size)
Susan Graver Stretch Denim Long A-Line Skirt - QVC, $23
Motto (R) Stretch Denim Long Skirt with Heavy Stitch Detail - QVC, $21.72
Motto Stretch Long Denim Skirt with Leather Trim - QVC, $27.73
If you wanted to go with a bit more modern cut of a denim skirt you could grab a knee-length skirt in a slimmer pencil shape. This length can be a little easier to wear also as it can be easily transitioned from summer (paired with sandals) right into winter (paired with tights and boots).

Some recent looks spied in Fashion Magazines, Ads and Spring Runway Collections.
Top Row (L - R):
Denim Pencil Skirt - Old Navy, $29.50
Denim Pencil Skirt - Spiegel, $29.00
Knit Denim Skirt - J.Jill, $19.99
Bottom Row (L-R):
Drawstring Denim Skirt - Old Navy, $26.50
Denim High Waist Skirt - Anne Klein, $38.99

i really like this one. i was having a problem with wearing a denim skirt at all. i thought i looked funny. i didn't think about pairing it with tights and boots so it's updated a bit. i'm going to try that!
I'm so short that I rarely wear longer skirts, but I like the examples you've shared.
Denim skirts (long and short) are always one of the pieces I find everywhere in thrift stores. They're so ubiquitous and classic that people always have them (and are therefore always giving them away!). Therefore, check out some resale shops for option, too - especially if you want to experiment with different cuts, lengths, etc.

I don't know if you have a Cato near you but they usually have LOTS of long denim skirts at great prices!
