Reader Question - Cruise Ship Coverage

ReaderQuestion

I have been reading your blog for awhile now, and I love it. I love the combinations you put together. I haven't owned a cardigan since elementary school, and now I am loving them, especially when they are belted!

Anyways, I am going on a cruise to Mexico next month, and I have one formal dress I plan on wearing, but there are 2 formal nights on the cruise. Do you have any ideas on what I could wear that won't cost a fortune? There are also a few "musts" the dress should have. It needs to have sleeves, and hit at the knee or below. I love the look of wrap dresses, but don't know if I can pull it off. I am 5'8" and a size 12/14.

Thanks for the help. You are great, and I seriously am addicted to your blog!
Thanks,
Cami

First let me say, I am JEALOUS!! Your cruise sounds wonderful - how fun! Now for finding a dress for "formal" night on the cruise ship that provides some coverage . . . there are sites that specilize in modest formal and semi-formal gowns (Beautifully Modest, A Formal Choice, and more) but their prices are $150+ on average for a dress. Boo!

I say save that money and use it for souvenirs and excursions! From what I have seen on the cruises I have been on is "formal" night isn't really "formal" (sure there will be some in their old prom gear) but should really be called "dressy" night. Below are a few dresses that are under $50, but will be more than appropriate for formal night on your cruise - just add some sparkly accessories.

Shopping Guide:

Misty Chain Bracelet - Forever 21, $5.80
Lumani Silver Heels - 6pm.com, $24

Here are a couple of dresses that are sleeveless, but you could add a fancy shrug to give you the arm coverage you desire.

Also, I know you mentioned the possibility of a wrap dress - considering this is an almost universally flattering style of dress, they can be hard to find. However, over the weekend I heard about a new to me site, eShakti. eShakti offers a wide selection of clothing, including wrap dresses, that range in size from 0 to 26 and you can even have them customize the fit at great prices! So be sure to check them out too!

Have a marvelous time, darling, and send me a postcard!

also jealous of the cruise!

my husband and I went on a cruise in September, and I was positively panic-stricken about formal night.

I bought a black maxi-dress at Ann Taylor Loft, and had a basic black dress. People on formal nights ran the gammut with their wardrobe choices - some people felt that jogging suits were appropriate and then there were others who were blinding blingy with all the sequins. I wore my maxi dress with a pretty beaded wrap from White House Black Market, and felt more than appropriate.

Have fun!! Don't worry about what other people are doing, just enjoy yourself!!

I am in love with that orange dress in the top pic, its so nice, I can so see that on a cruise, sipping cocktails...

Great advice!

Hey! You can also let her know that she can buy a pashmina on the cruise ship! I got a bunch of pashminas on my first cruise- they were only $10 each!

Also- formal nights are really up to the people going. My husband and I actually opt for the casual nights for dinners and then eat somewhere else on formal nights because we don't want to get dressed up on vacation! LOL

Wow- I have never heard of eShakti, but just spent 45 minutes looking at all their stuff! It's great! I honestly don't think I've ever seen style, modest options and price come together so well! Thank you so much for the link.

Kimberly, thanks so much for putting this together. I am loving the purple dress in the top picture. I have never heard of eShakti, but took a look at the website, and am loving some of their dresses. Thanks again!

You're absolutely right about cruise attire. The dresses you picked are perfect. I really like the coral mermaid cut dress.
