Daily Outfit - 10/30/09

dailywear

Happy Friday!! It has been quite the week this week - super busy with work and tenant activities, my first exam in my licensing course (which I am happy to report I got a 98/100 on) and more. I am looking forward to doing some thrifting and "fun book" reading (vs. textbook reading) this weekend. I'm not a big Halloween person, so no real big plans there!

Keeping it simple with black and jeans today, but tossed on a scarf and some new shoes to keep it from being too bland.

Black Tee - TJ Maxx, $13 (Aug. 2009)
Black Knit Jacket - Du Jour/QVC, on sale for $24 (Aug. 2009)
Jeans - Compliments of Dressbarn
Scarf - Diane von Furstenberg/Selective Seconds Consignment Store, $8 (Oct. 2009)
Taupe Wedge Shoes - Vaneli/6pm.com, on sale for $15 (Oct. 2009)

Looked through an electronic Hermes Scarf Guide I had yesterday and decided to use this idea of wearing it like a man's tie so you could see lots of the pretty colors.

Daily Outfit - 10/29/09

This evening I have a big exam for the licensing course I am taking for my job. To get in the studious spirit I decided to wear my "uniform". My outfit today has all the makings of a "school uniform" with the blue oxford, jumper, plaid, and sensible shoes! Hopefully it looks more professional though!

Blue Oxford - Old Navy, clearance for $11 (2008)
Black Jumper - Target, clearance for $15, (2007)
Vest - Bitten by SJP/Steve & Barry's, $9 (May 2008)
Necklace - Consignment Store, on sale for $12.50 (Sept. 2009)

Tights that are really more like textured hose (even though I hate hose! I normally layer these over opaque black tights, but its going to hit almost 70 today and I have a 14-hour day today so didn't feel like dealing with two pairs) - Target, clearance for $3
Black Comfy Heels - Aerosoles/6pm.com, on sale for $25 (Aug. 2009)
Gorgeous Mosaic Ring - ShopKim on Etsy (Oct. 2009)

Wrap it Up with a Scarf!

checkitout

Over the weekend I went to Dressbarn to check out their sweater collection. With the change in temps and the leaves falling I felt the need to add to my own collection. In addition to getting a sweater (which you will probably see later this week) I grabbed a great little Scarf Guide they had available. As we all know, the long rectangular scarves are everywhere again for fall and can add a great pop of color and patterned to work and play outfits. I get a lot of questions on how to wear scarves though, so I thought I would share Dressbarn's great ideas below.

Be sure to pick up your own guide, as well as, some scarves at your local Dressbarn too!

When I spied this purple mini-cable knit sweater while thrifting I almost passed since it really isnt't my style. But when I factored in it wasa great color, my size, mint condition, good quality (Land's End) and less than a $1 I really couldn't leave it behind.

So, yesterday when Already Pretty's Sal posted the LL Bean vs. J.Crew Cage Match I saw this picture of a J.Crew styling and immediately thought of my cable knit sweater.

And with that I tossed this on this morning. I threw on a necklace and gray heels to add some additional interest eventhough overall the look is pretty bland.

Reader Question - Mad Men Halloween Costume

ReaderQuestion
microsoft_happyhalloween

I know that you have been really busy lately, but I was hoping you could help me out. I hate how all costumes for Halloween are so reveling. I want to go dress as one of the awesome women from AMC Mad Men, I love that style. I need to know where I can get the style of Mad Men on a budget, I have nothing in my closet that will work. Please help.... Thanks so much, I love your style.

-Liz

Liz - Thanks for the sweet words. I had some time over the weekend to "shop" a couple of looks for you. I'm with you in the fact that I don't care for the "sexy" this and "sexy" that Halloween costumes that seem to take over things this time of year. I think going as a Mad Men character is a great idea!

With retro inspired fashion being so prevalent right now scoring a "throwback" look while shopping new can be pretty easy to do. Below is a "Peggy" look that you can get by combining pieces from JC Penney & Kohl's. Also, the great thing about these pieces is they are easily transferable into your day-to-day wardrobe without looking outdated or costumey.

outfit

Worthington® Pleat Neck Blouse - JC Penney, $14.99
east5th® Belted Godet Skirt - JC Penney, $19.99
east5th® 'Beverly' Buckle Pump - JC Penney, $29.99
Ribbed Pima Cardigan - Kohl's, $17.99
Napier® Gold-Tone Pearl Necklace - Kohl's, $15.60
daisy fuentes® A-Line Clutch - Kohl's, $15.99

To score a "Betty" look I headed to a local Goodwill and found the following. First I looked through the dresses to find one with a fitted top and a-line bottom. The cream one below fit the bill and was gorgeous with the braiding detail at waist, heavy textured cream fabric and inverted pleat. I was a little surprised to find that it was Target New Stock since it had such a vintage vibe. Also, I grabbed a black cardi to be draped over the shoulders and a pair of simple black pumps. I thought finding shoes would be difficult, but actually spotted a few pairs that would fit the bill in a range of sizes. To purchase the items below would have cost $13 total.

Now, my local Goodwill does not sell jewelry individually (I know in other areas they do though), but DAV and Salvation Army Thrift Stores do. If I would have had more time on Saturday I would have gone for an example of a necklace or clip-on earrings to add to the ensemble. Also, if your mom, grandma, aunt, etc. are handy see if you can raid their jewelry boxes for some possible necklaces, brooches and more.

GW

(Sorry for the poor picture quality - Goodwill was a madhouse and I had to quick click this picture with my Blackberry)

I think the truly key thing with scoring a Mad Men look is the hair and makeup. Here are a couple of links that have great info on achieving the look and examples of the Mad Men's leading ladies' looks.

I am a sucker for the classic black and camel color combo. I opted to toss on a little green with my necklace also, however, I'm keeping things pretty simple for the long day ahead. Since I have a lunch meeting I am walking to I will be swapping out my snakeskin heels for a pair of leopard flats. These shoes are cute, but not exactly the most comfortable for a 4 block walk!

Make the Most of Your Closet - Melissa

makethemost

For the 4th Installment of "Make the Most of Your Closet" I tackled the 19 items that Melissa sent me. Melissa had a good array of items and I was excited for the challenge.

Style Profile:
Height/Size: 5'4", Misses 4-6, Proportional Hourglass Figure

Loves Colors: All Blues, Dark Purples, Dark Fuchsia/Dark Pinks, Red,Brown, Teal

Not such a fan of: Pastels, Yellow, plaid or stripes (I really think you should rethink this one since stripes and plaid go hand in hand with the classic & preppy style you say you have, plus they are a great way to add pattern and interest)

Style: Classic, Contemporary Chic, a little preppy

Accessories I Love: Jewelry of all kinds! I have quite a collection, but no statement necklaces like what is in style at the moment. I love waist belts (not the big corset type though), but can't find any small enough or in my price range.

Want to Try More Of: Prints, layering, creating flattering silhouettes, finding a good pair of versatile flats that are cute, belts that fit my small waist, graphic tees that have no words (I own NO graphic tees and I want to try to learn to wear it to the office as well as casual!)

I want outfits that work for my buisness casual office (with a fairly strict dress code) as well as casual wear that I can wow the hubby with. I want to be put together, sophisticated, but attractive and sexy without dressing overtly sexy. I am only 22, so I want to have fun with it and look like I am a well put together 22 year old, not a 22 year old that dresses like a 40 year old lol. Another challenge: WARM outfits for the terrible upstate NY fall/winters.

Here are the 19 items that Melissa sent me to work with:

Existing1

Existing2

Here are the additional 11 types of items totally $207 I suggest for Melissa's wardrobe in order to optimize the items she already owns.

New

Pretty Graphic Tee - Melissa said she wanted to try this trend, plus it is a great item that can be worn in a multitude of ways with the right layering.
Watercolor Graphic Tee - Old Navy, $14.50

Black Long Sleeve Tee - These are such a staple in my winter wardrobe as they can be layered under a ton of stuff to create an extra layer to keep you warm. I choose one with a bit "fancier" of a neckline and cuffs.
Jersey Top - Old Navy, $14.50

Patterned Tunic - This top can be worn in a multitude of ways, plus it comes with an obi tie belt that can be used in other outfits without the top. For less than $23 you are getting two items that can be used not only together but independantly.
Tribal Flutter Tunic w/ Tie Belt - Forever 21, $22.80

Plaid Tunic - This warm plaid shirt has an updated cut making it a fun piece for cold temps.
Plaid Tunic w/ Tie Belt - Forever 21, $17.80

Striped Top - I am a sucker for stripes, and I think they can add a level of ooh-la-la chicness to almost any outfit!
Striped 3Q Top - Forever 21, $9.50

Patterned Cardi - I think is this a staple every gal should have in their wardrobe. Cardigans are great for casual or work wear and an in the element of a pattern and it becomes a stand out piece.
Floral Cardi - Target, $25.00

Cardigan - Here is another great cardigan with an updated shilouette including the shawl front and tie belt so Melissa won't loose her hourglass figure under the layers.
Metallic Wrap Cardigan - Old Navy, $34.50

Scarf - I'm a huge fan of scarves as you know. They can add so much color and pattern and are a simple accessory that fits everyone!
Floral Scarf - Kohl's, $12.90

Necklace - Melissa said she didn't have any statement necklaces, so I grabbed this one that will add a huge impact and go with practically everything!
Daisette Rhinestone Necklace - Forever 21, $15.80

T-Strap Heels - When I spied these heels I fell in love! They are a great color combo that can be worn with a ton, but yet don't loose their place as being a neutral go-to shoe. Add in the fact that the have a sensible heel and it is a win-win!
Saida T-Strap Pumps - Target, $19.99

Gray Flats - These flats area great neutral color and the pointy toe will help add height even though they are flats.
Anstin Point Flats - Payless, $19.99

Another item that will be needed for some of these outfits showing skirts and dresses is black tights and can be picked up for about $5.

Now with those 30 items I can up with 48 combos for work and play!

12

TL - A patterned cardi over a graphic tee is a great way to "fun-up" jeans and flats for the weekend.
TR - The black & white polka dot top with look super fun with the floral skirt and black accessories.
BL - The short sleeve blazer can be worn straight into winter by layering over a t-neck sweater and adding a scarf for a pop of pattern (if you had brown dress pants you could sport a similar look to work).
BR - The bright floral cardi will look great with black and cream and those great t-straps.

11

TL - The scarf will dress up the casual cardi, jeans and boots look for weekend.
TR - By layering a belted cardigan over a pretty graphic tee you can wear it work.
BL - Layer the cap sleeve light blue tee over the black/white polka dot blouse for a fun, vested look.

8

TL - The polka dot blouse with the statement necklace will be perfectly professional when paired with a blazer for work.
TR - Keep it comfy yet chic on weekends with a t-neck sweater, cord blazer, scarf and jeans.
BL - Super simple with a plaid tunic, jeans and boots.
BR - Boots and a scarf keep this simple outfit interesting.

7

TL - A cardi and flats with a plaid tunic and jeans make a great casual look.
TR - The pop of bright cardi with the neutral outfit topped off with a statement necklace and belt make for a great work look.
BL - The gray cardi and flats will be great with the striped tee and pants.

6

TL - Layer the t-neck sweater over the dress to convert it to a skirt look and top off with the belt.
TR - Make the stripe tee work with a wool skirt by layering a cardi and scarf over it.
BL - Wear the black LS tee under the pretty graphic tee and top off with a scarf.
BR - Layer the LS tee under the dress, belt it and add a pop of color and pattern with the scarf.

5

TL - The layered t-neck sweater and cardigan will be great with the skirt and two-tone heels.
TR - Use the belt from the Tunic over the printed top and cord blazer for a structured casual look.
BL - Bright Magenta and Gray are a great color combo in the casual look.
BR - Add subtle jewel-tones to a work outfit with the printed top, scarf and two-tone heels.

4

3

TL - Automatically dress up a sweater and pants with a scarf for work.
TR - Keep it simple on weekends by adding a cardi and boots to a patterned tee and jeans.
BL - Layer the black LS tee under the dress and add a pop of color with the cardi over it all.
BR - Make this sheer tunic work for winter by layering over a t-neck sweater (add camel or brown dress pants for work wear).

2

TL - Layer the short sleeve blazer over the t-neck sweater and dress pants for work.
TR - The cardi paired over the tie-neck top will be super cute and casual with flats on the weekend.
BL - The patterned tee sleeves poking out from the short sleeve blazer will be super cute (you can easily transition this look to work wear with a swap of the jeans to dress pants or a skirt)?
BR - The sheer tunic will look great under the cord blazer with jeans (once again, could easily swap the pants and make this work for work!).

1

TL - Get a multitude of looks with this dress by layering over and under it - this time with a t-neck sweater and blazer.
TR - Add dimension to this outfit by layering the cardigan over the printed tee and wrapping on a scarf.
BL - Leave all eyes on the fun shoes with a neutral black, white and gray combo.
BR - Don't be afraid to layer a blazer over a cardi and top combo. Button a few buttons on the cardi, but leave the blazer open so you can see plenty of the magenta color showing.

Well, there you have it, Melissa, 48 looks for work and play. Hope you see a few you like! To get a closer look at the outfits, click here.

Feel like keeping things simple on a Monday, then just wear a shirt that has your jewelry already printed on it! During the past couple of "Make the Most of Your Closet" mix and match posts I have suggested wearing a "pretty" graphic tee as part of your work wear. I have to admit though I haven't done it often myself. So, when I spied this tee on clearance at Target this past week I knew I had to grab it.

Reader Question - Accessorize a One Shoulder Dress

ReaderQuestion

I need some help this year I am going to my first marine Ball with my husband. I was told “it’s like prom but more grown up.” I don’t know about you but my prom was horribly tacky with big hair and bigger dresses I don’t want to repeat that. I’ve got the dress which I scored on e-bay for $40! Sorry I am very proud of that find, now I have no idea what accessories to wear! I normally wear necklaces but the dress has that beautiful one shoulder thing going on and I think necklaces would just be too busy. Please help!
Lovi

Lovi - First I have to say, what a major score on that dress!! It is gorgeous and what a fantastic price you got it for.

I'm with you, with the one shoulder design I think it is best to stay away from a necklace. My suggestion would be to go with statement earrings and either a bracelet or statement ring. Also, shy away from big hair by going with a simple chignon to leave the focus on your earrings and neckline.

Here's a couple of looks:

lovi

I love the idea of turquoise accessories for a fancy affair. Eva Mendes first rocked my socks off with her emsemble (or actually Rachel Zoe's) pairing a white dress and chunky turquoise necklace. Recently Lily on Gossip Girl also paired turquoise with her magenta wedding dress.
With that, this turquoise earrings would look stunning with the red dress and a simple gold cocktail ring.
Beaded Chandelier Earrings - Forever 21, $4.80
Gold Cocktail Ring - Forever 21, $4.80

Another great look would be to pair the dress with art deco inspired black and clear crystals.
Jeweled Crest Earrings - Forever 21, $6.80
Polished Brick Elastic Bracelet - Forever 21, $10.80
Savanna Beaded Wristlet - ebags.com, $23.99

Have a fantastic time, Lovi!

Daily Outfit - 10/21/09

I feel so much more like myself today! This past two days have been filled with outfits that made me feel "schlumpy" - Monday's no thought cardi and dress and yesterday's pants just had me feeling a bit off. However, today's Inspiration Calendar called for inspiration from Tibi's Fall Line. The reason I included it was because of the awesome royal blue and black combos, so I just had to sport the combo myself today!

I grabbed this top randomly one day at Old Navy - they didn't have it in my usual size so I opted to go with a size up. I'm glad I did because I really like the billowing, blousy look.

Recently Updated87

Top - Old Navy, super clearance for $8.50 (Sept. 2009)
Black Dress (yep, its a dress under there!) - Target, clearance for $12.50 (Jan. 2009)
Necklace - I made it!
Black Belt - NY & Co, sale + promo code for $10-ish (May 2009)
Booties - Kmart & Etsy, total cost $46 (Jan. 2009 & Oct. 2009)

Now more about these booties - I spied these gorgeous Kelsi Dagger black booties with the grey suede flower back in August and fell in love. I knew I could do something similar with the pair of black booties I already had and save myself the $200. At first, I thought I would just buy a couple of matching flower brooches, but many of the ones I saw were too thick/deep. Then, I kept meaning to get to the craft store to buy supplies, but knew I would be sucked into buying way too many supplies, drop $50, and end up with ho-hum flowers. So, I opted to find a seller on Etsy who made flowers I liked, and one willing to make two matching ones for me. I found PresumptousMe and after a couple of messages back and forth had agreed to a color and price. I can't say enough about this sweet seller. She worked quickly and mailed my flowers super promptly (she even included an adorable extra gifty with my purchase).

Recently Updated88

To affix the flowers to the booties you could either use velcro with adhesive to stick to the flower to the boots or for an even less permanent fix use Hollywood Fashion Tape.

I have to say they have been quite the eye catcher today. I have received compliments from a ton of people including unlikely strangers ranging from an elderly gentleman to a woman wearing crocs!
