Reader Question - Long White Cardigan Outfit Ideas

ReaderQuestion

Dearest Fab Finder,
I just want to say thank you! My roommate introduced me to your blog a month ago and it has been a pleasure reading/seeing the combinations that you put together. You have made me look at my closet and try different combinations (something I wouldn't have done in the past)!
Would you be able to help me with some longer cardigan issues? I purchased 2 white cardigans for $5 & $10 on a clearance rack. They both go to about mid-thigh length. One is short sleeved and of lighter fabric for summer and the other longer sleeved for winter. They are both button ups. I really like them but I am just unsure how to coordinate them with my clothes? Please let me know if you need pictures.

Cheers,
Meredith
Cardigan Clueless

Meredith, welcome to Fab Finds Under $50! It sounds like you scored some great cardis at even better prices! I pulled up a couple of pictures that I believe show cardigans similar to the ones you have recently add to your wardrobe.

cardi

Sample Cardigans shown are Left - Banana Republic's Long Linen Cardigan, $89, and Right - Target's Long-Sleeve Open Wrap Cardigan, $20

Personally I think you have almost limitless options as to what to pair the cardis with, but here are a few ideas in particular:

Drawing upon inspiration from First Lady Michelle Obama's Inauguration Outfit and a recent stunning combination in purple that she wore to a ribbon cutting, I think the white cardi would be fantastic left unbuttoned and layered over a dress as these two looks demonstrate.

4

Floral-print dress - Newport News, on sale for $39
Betsey Johnson Heart Charm Stretch Bracelet - Nordstrom, $50
Preston & York Interlock Belt - Dillards, $26.60
Two Lips Talina - 6pm.com, $36.23

2

Print Boatneck Dress - Target, $39.99
Forever Flower Brooch - Forever 21, $3.80
Metallic Belt - NY & Co, on sale for $11.86
Oh Deer! Marilyn - 6pm.com, $40.25

Create a streamlined, crisp look for work by pairing with white pants. Once again leave the cardi unbutton and you can either belt the shirt and cardi or just the shirt leaving the cardi loose.

1

Classic Button-Front Shirt - Old Navy, on sale for $15
Merona® Collection Twill Pant - Target, $32.99
MICHAEL Michael Kors Wide Prong Suede Belt - Nordstrom, $45
Gabriella Rocha Cayden - 6pm.com, $43.70

Pair the cardi with a simple tank and cropped pants and use a brooch to gather the cardi together (similar to what I did here).

3

Lattice-Crochet Top - Old Navy, on sale for $10
Slim Stretch Capris - Old Navy, on sale for $15
Bejeweled Floral Brooch - Spiegel, on sale for $34
Nine West Jape2 - 6pm.com, $42.55

Lastly, toss the cardi on with jeans and fun pops of color with accessories and great shoes for a casual day or evening out!

5

Boyfriend Lace Tank - American Eagle, $17.50
Artist Jeans - American Eagle, $29.50
Coleen Dangling Earrings - Forever 21, $4.80
Audrey Scarf - Alloy, $16.50
Soho Lab Hayden - 6pm.com, $28.75

As for winter time looks with the long-sleeve cardi you can do many of the same types of looks, however, it is hard to give examples given the availability of off-season clothes. I hope there are some looks you like and can coordinate with your wardrobe here.

I must say after putting these together I really want a long white cardigan!!!

Daily Outfit - 06/26/09

dailywear

I have to admit, my casual wardrobe lacks a bit as I usually focus on buying "work" clothes. Also, I've always struggled with summer-time outfits given my love of layering and the hot temps. So, when I spied this outfit in July's issue of InStyle I made a mental note of it for when I needed a casual yet chic out. Well, today my mom and I were headed out shopping so it seemed the perfect time to put my spin on this look.

instyle

And here it is! I didn't wear a straw fedora and I carried my usual LV Neverfull MM Purse, but other than that I had similar items.

Reader Question - Caribbean Style fo an Apple

ReaderQuestion

Hi there,
I am so glad, I found your blog, I have been following for about 3 weeks and I just love it.I am an apple figure; I look 4 months pregnant, thanks to my fibroids. I am going to the Caribbean next month and don’t know what to wear. Also, finding swimsuits is getting harder and harder. My style is eclectic.
Please help.
Emely

First let me say, I'm so jealous of your upcoming vacay! Time on the beach soaking up rays while sipping a pretty drink complete with umbrella sounds right up my alley!

With the body-shape and figure concerns you have outlined I think going with looser fits on top and playing up your assets a.k.a your legs and bubbies (as the NJ Housewives say) is the way to go. Luckily, right now tunic tops paired with skinny crops, cigarette pants or bermuda shorts, and flowy dresses and maxidress are all the rage.

Reader Question - Post Baby under $150

I recently had a baby (she'll be five months on Thursday) and I'm still in between clothing sizes. Will you please help me find affordable outfits, shoes, and accessories that will hold me over in the meantime? I'd like to spend no more than $100-$150 if possible.

If this helps, I love, love, love anything safari/ethnic and I'm still nursing so I need tops/dresses that aren't cumbersome to lift up :)!

Reader Question - White Shoes

ReaderQuestion

I love your blog... you are so creative and give me inspiration for my daily looks and to get me thinking outside of the box... keep it up!!! You rock!

I do have a question for you... I will be heading to Vegas at the end of the month... YIPPEE!!! And I want to take a pair of cute & comfy white shoes with me. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Nadina

PS - I love a wedge or a heel!

Nadina - I love Vegas!! I know you said you love a wedge or heel, but I had to stay somewhat sensible with my selections. Let's face it, comfort is key with footwear when in Las Vegas due to all of the huge hotels, malls and all of the walking you do. With that I tried to pick fashionable, yet comfortable options. Hope you see something that catches your eye!

Band-Aid Friction Block Stick - drugstore.com, $7.49

Daily Outfit - 06/24/09

Today's inspiration was supposed to be "all about the shoes". Instead though I found inspiration by watching the first half of a Lifetime Movie, Killer Hair, last evening that I had recorded. In one scene she has a black jacket paired with a bold white/black print skirt and red shoes. Also, she wears her hair wavy the whole movie (I tried to find some pics to share, but no such luck). With that I grabbed this out of my closet last evening and decided not to fight my natural wave when it comes to my hair.

*Speaking of Etsy, does anyone watch Weeds? This past Sunday Nancy's sister mentions that she got her necklace on Etsy. Kind of fun!

On a Personal Note, today is my last day at my current job. I will be starting a new chapter in my career with a new company and bigger responsibility on Monday. With that my blogging might be a bit sporadic the next few days as I adjust to a little bit longer commute and earlier start time. Stick with me though as I plan on posting some reader questions (I have gotten a ton lately!) and my daily outfits as I can.

Reader Question - Cruisin'

ReaderQuestion

I love you're blog and am constantly impressed with your ability to answer so many reader's questions. So, here's mine. I am leaving next week to go on a 5 day cruise with my parents and little brother to Key West and Cozumel. I know that I need casual and semi-formal clothes as well as pool side stuff and some athletic gear (for yoga, kayacking and the gym). Do you have any suggestions for what to pack so that I am not lugging my entire closet?
My style is best described as "cute grown-up"- sundresses, walking shorts, cute tops (I love a peter pan collar!)
Kathryn

Kathryn, since time is of the essence with you leaving next week I'm going to keep this post pretty simple. You are right, cruises can be a bit overwhelming to pack for since you have so many different types of events to pack for. However, if you choose items that are color coordinated you can get a lot of bang from the items in your suitcase.

For the most part cruises are very casual as you spend the majority of your day in pool gear or casually strolling around your port of call. Here are 11 pieces that you can mix and match to create 7 different looks.

Today's inspiration calendar called for a simple patterned dress which I totally intended to wear, but then this skirt caught my eye. I bought it a couple of weeks ago and absolutely fell in love with the color! I decided with it reaching 90 again today it was as good of a day as any to dress like a dreamsicle.

Reader Question - Work Convention Wardrobe

ReaderQuestion

I just found your blog a week ago and have been spending hours combing through your posts. You've given me so much help and inspiration! But convention with my job is coming up at the end of July and I'm already in a panic about what to wear. Could you help me out?
-Katie

Katie and I emailed a bit after this initial question and I also found out the following:

*The first day is all on my feet getting ready and I don't usually have much time to fancy up for the (somewhat casual) reception that evening. The next day is a bit more calm working at the registration desk while meetings are going on. And I have a little more time to change and refresh before the (somewhat dressy) banquet dinner in the evening. The following day I'm back at the registration desk until noon and then cleaning up in the afternoon with a board meeting following. On this half day, most people dress a bit more casually than the full day of meetings the day before.
*I try to dress modestly and prefer dresses and skirts that cover the knee (24"-25" from the waist), sleeves in my tops and dresses and modest necklines.
*I wear scarves as headbands most of the time. I have black and white and a few printed ones but feel free to throw one in for each outfit if you want.
*My style (style?) has ADD most of the time, but I really like a classy, traditional look with some fun/trendy mixed in.
*I love the layered look and want to learn how to accessorize (especially with belts) in a more classy, put together way (your blog is helping!:) and I want to find, buy and wear more heels.
*She also linked a couple of dresses that she has contemplated buying recently.

With that, here are my suggestions, Katie. Have a great time at the convention!

The first day I selected two dresses that can be worn during the day and with a couple of changes with accessories can be worn straight to the reception. The black/white patterned dress wouldn't need to be worn with the cardi, but I fear it may be a bit shorter than you like. Unfortunately, Target didn't provide measurements on their website. The polka dot dress is plenty long, but you will need to layer with the lightweight cardi for the coverage you prefer.

Day #1:

Super simple today, but its Monday and I really didn't want to get up and ready this morning. I did decide to grab a pair of "blast from the past" heels though. I bought these Oh Deer! knock-offs of the super popular Christian Louboutin style three years ago. I was on a waitlist for over a month before I finally got them and it was so worth it. With that while they aren't the "must have" shoe anymore I still enjoy wearing them occassionally.

Also, check out these earrings! I won these great earrings in a giveaway that Sara hosted over at Unwrap Life in honor of her one year blogiversary (she is so funny - add her to your list of must reads! Also, she has a great daily wear blog too, xoxo Closet Girl). Just look how great these earrings go with my beloved necklace that use to be my Grandma's! I'm positively giddy!

Thrift Store Shopping Tips Part II

shop

Last Friday, I shared some of my tips for shopping at thrift stores. I asked for all of you, my fabulous fab finds readers, to share your thrift tips also. I've pulled them all together now for easy access. Also, I have put a couple of quick links to the tips over in the left hand column. Happy Thrifting!

*Sal shares all sorts of tips over on her blog.

*Lately I have been having lots of luck finding great things at church sales. Especially scarves and belts since these do not seem to be hot items. Most of the church sales in my area have bag sales on the last day where you can fill a bag for $5 (last weekend I filled an entire bag for only $2!!!) I used to think thrifting was for the poor, too, but it really is a lot of fun when you finally find that awesome piece. ~ Tara

* The Thrifty Stylist says, "You should keep an eye out for thrift stores that are arranged by color- i know my goodwill is, as is Planet Aid usually, or if you're in Pac NW, Buffalo Mercantile... you can skip entire racks of things you would never wear :D (like the oranges, browns and yellows for me!) and it saves a TON of time :D"

* I've had lots of luck lately thrifting brand new, name brand items. I'm fairly new to thrifting, but one thing I've noticed is that the way my thrift stores categorize by size can be WAY off. They must sort things so fast that they don't always notice what the actual size of a garment is, or they get confused by European sizing. So, my tip is, don't just stick to the section that is supposedly your size. Check out all the sections. There is probably a gem hidden somewhere. For example, my last trip turned up a pair of brand new 7 For All Mankind trouser jeans that were in the wrong size section. Who knows how long they'll sit there before they are discovered? ~ Christine

* OhHoneyNo says, "check the mirrors! people are always picking items off racks, then taking piles at a time to mirrors in less crowded sections to see how they look - then end up leaving them there. which explains how i found a pristine stash of jcrew/banana republic/express skirts and dresses in my size on one such occasion. so ALWAYS check the racks right by EVERY mirror, in EVERY section - my stash was among the winter coats!"

*I layer lightweight clothing (skirts and cardis) over leggings and tanks to wear when trying on clothes. This way I can try on in the aisles if there is no dressing room, and I don't have to worry about items of questionable cleanliness! ~ Beth

* The Bargainist says, "My tip would be similar to Beth, but for a different reason. I always try to wear my favorite jeans, a simple necklace and a black or white tank with my outfit. This way I can try on shirts and know what they will look like with my jeans, I can try on cardigans and know if they fit well with a tank...and a simple necklace doesn't distract from everything! :)" and "ohhh....another tip I remember. My mom told me that if you don't want to try on pants...a quick way to know if they fit you is to take the waist and fold it around your neck. If it fits around your neck with a 1 in. overlap, then it will fit your waits! "

*You can haggle prices sometimes, if you ask them why it's priced that way and point a flaw, sometimes they will fix it. I got a new shirt asking $9, but had an ink stain (my mom is a wizard at ink stains) and told them I thought it was $.99 so to bag it. They changed it- $.99 only! Also- research areas. It's not always true, but I live in a big city with lots of GW's, and one is by a retirement community. I ALWAYS find amazing vintage stuff because I go where the elderly are! Wealthier neighborhoods also tend to throw out more stuff- usually higher quality. So- if you're hating thrifting, find a nearby town and you may change your mind! ~ igetdressed

* Marie Lemondrop shares some good tips here too.

Thanks for all of the great tips and ideas, everyone! Funny, I have an itch to go thrifting sometime soon! :-)

Daily Outfit - 06/19/09

dailywear

Today's inspiration calendar called for a maxi dress or maxi skirt. I've had this skirt for a couple of years now and only worn it once - maybe twice. I have to admit this is one of those trends that I think is best left to others. Definitely not the most flattering on me. However, it is super comfy and I don't have to worry about sitting like a lady at my desk. In fact right now I am sitting Indian Style* with no worries!

White V-Neck Tee - Target, $10 (Feb. 2009)
Black Cardi - NY & Co, sale + coupon for $25 (Spring 2009)
Necklace - Estate Auction (Spring 2009)
Turquoise Belt - NY & Co, on sale for $10 (Spring 2008)
Scarf - For Love 21, $8 (Winter 2009)
Black Maxi Skirt - Grandma Judy Collection
Sandals - Target, $24 (May 2009)

*I am aware that Indian Style isn't the most PC to say, so I googled alternatives and found that Criss Cross Applesauce is a synonym. I learn something new every day!

ReaderQuestion

Thanks so much for all of the great reader questions I have been receiving. I try to tackle a couple of each week and still have some I am trying to get to. In order to make submitting questions, thoughts and ideas that much easier I have added a simple form powered by kontactr to the bottom of the page.

form

Simply fill out this form and I will receive an email from you!

Also, I will be creating the July Outfit Inspiration Calendar soon, so feel free to submit any ideas that you have for it! Don't forget we would love to have you as a member of the Flickr Group showcasing your inspired outfits also.

thanks

Thanks to Sabrena, queen of the seriously fierce eyeshadow, for this award! I appreciate it very much. Be sure to check out her blog, Shades of Sabrena.

Also, just a quick Etsy Shop Update - I have added some great vintage scarves that I scored at a recent estate sale along with some rings made from vintage clip-on earrings. More updates will hopefully be coming in the next few days as well.
