I am a Mama-to-be who just entered the 2nd trimester of my first pregnancy. Up to this point, I have been able to wear my pre-pregnancy wardrobe. And now seemingly over night, my bump has grown to the point that I can not wear anything in my pre-pregnancy wardrobe. I know that I need to build a maternity wardrobe but I do not want to spend a lot money on myself when I could buy cute baby things instead. Can you help me build a maternity wardrobe that is appropriate for work in a business casual work setting, date nights with my husband, and the occasional church function?
Many Thanks,
Kimberly
Kimberly (great name by the way!), congratulations! I'm going to be honest, when I first received your email I felt a bit daunted by the task at hand. All that kept going through my mind was a line from a Teen Pregnancy Pamphlet that my mom gave to me about 14 years ago that listed "Maternity Clothes aren't fashionable" as a reason not to be a teen mom. I haven't had any experience with maternity fashion first hand, but after looking at the Maternity Sections of Target, Old Navy and Motherhood I discovered something - - Maternity Clothes Can Be Fashionable!!
I came up with 19 items to create 20+ outfits for around $380 - that's less than $20 an outfit (plus, I know you already have a few pairs of shoes and accessories that will continue to serve you well during this transitional time)!
The Items:
Top Row Left to Right:

I think you did a great job! The only other thing I would suggest is for her to look at non-maternity stuff, as well. So many styles are loose fitting (tunics, empire-waists, etc.), that she may be able to find stuff that will work. And she can then wear those things post-pregnancy without feeling like she is still wearing maternity clothes.
I continue to be inspired by your cost-effective and oh-so-cute outfit combos.
having had 3 children, i can say your reader probably has some post-pregnancy friends that are her size that she can borrow from. that would help keep costs down. and after she is done using them, she can look for a consignment shop so she can recoup some of her investment. after my last pregnancy, i was able to get back about half of what i invested through consignment. good luck!
I'm impressed by this amazing array! Also, the other Kimberly may want to check out the academic chic blog at http://www.academichic.com/
One of the girls just had her first baby and maintained incredible style (and posts) up until the day of her son's birth!
If money is an issue, I'd say hit consignment and thrift shops really hard in the coming days/weeks. Depending on the shop, you can walk away with some great, stylish bargains!
Example: My friend is pregnant and I'm about to lend her my maternity clothes. I was at the thrift store and spotted a really cute skirt from Target (new with tags!) marked to $1. not bad!
Borrow from whomever you can. And don't buy all your maternity wear at once.
You'll keep growing (duh) but your baby might be a little lower or higher toward the end, and the fit of clothing might change.
Plan to buy at least a few things in your last month or two.
Best wishes!
This is great! I am going to show this to my non blog reading pregnant friend!
Yeah, to second Kathryn, definitely check out Academichic, especially this post where E. does a whole recap of her pregnancy style: http://www.academichic.com/2009/08/04/es-maternity-style-recap-highlight-reel/ I thought it was really well done when I read it that I even forwarded it to a pregnant colleague of mine. -Krissie www.whatwouldkrissiewear.com
